01/26/07 - Bait Facelifts
How does one make a good bait
into a great bait? Simple, give it a face lift..
I started with a legendary 25 year old Bagley b. The paint
was chipped and faded from use.
and

I sent it off to one of the BEST
crankbait painters in the country, None other than Carolina
Chip.
Chip is the ONLY
person that I would allow to repaint a truly outstanding
crankbait. Chip, using my personal color choice -LOUD!!!-
actually enhanced the bass catching ability of this bait ...
sadly though - I likely will not fish with it.....after all
it is 25 years old. Chip as always truly an outstanding
paint job..

Jim Kientz holding a Boundary Waters
smallmouth hooked up on a CCLC Avenger!
Just returned from the trip to
Canada and everyone had a great time. We missed the spawn by
10-12 days, but that is fishing. Had some rather problematic
weather while there…rain, high winds, cold front moving
through and as you might imagine, all of those impacts on
locating the fish. I did take along one of your round-lip
Avenger crank bait (I had put the others in Ray’s [Ray
Scott's] tackle bag for him to use) and had an opportunity
to test it out. The action on the lure was fine; it ran true
and even despite the wind…caught some good fish. As it was
the only one I had with me…I used it sparingly because the
northern pike were stealing crank baits left and right. I
had already lost three crank baits, two spinner baits and a
Zara Spook to the pike and wasn’t too keen on tempting fate
by repeatedly using your bait. The bottom line is – you have
a fine bait and it does produce. Matter of fact, I strongly
recommend that you pack up a bag of those lures and take
them up to where we went.....
Regards,
Jim Kientz, Executive Director, Ray Scott Outdoors

Went down to my boss's pond;
sunny, hot air-low 90s--air-79-83, light wind, and a few
clouds.
I started throwing a new hard jerkbait I just got from
Carolina Chip. I haven't thrown a jerkbait in months but I
was pleasantly surprised when on my third cast in the deep
end brought me a nice 5 lber. The bait's top color even
matches the rod's accents.

Chip: Your baits were great! I
caught fish on all 3 types, although most were just 2-3 lbs
worth.
Most of the fish were just post spawn, and not chasing much
yet - I wish we were down there a couple weeks later, as the
CB bite is going to be on fire. I did coax a few, and one
being noteworthy - the one in the photo went 4 -10. I hope
it makes the wall.

My Man Chip, Myself and a few
fishing buddy's went down to Kerr & Gaston last week (3-28
to 3-30), and threw everything but the trolling motor at the
fish with NO results on Kerr. We went over to Lake Gaston.
We could not catch a fish with dynamite. In desperation I
threw the Carolina Chip Kuba Crankbait. Within 10 casts,
bumping it on the sandy/rocky bottom at 2/3', then dragging
it into 5/7 feet of water, I caught one. Five casts later,
another. A few minutes later still another. At the end of
the day, the Carolina Chip Crankbait caught 6, Five bass and
one yellow perch, and the other three guys caught "0".....
Thought you would like to know your Carolina Chip's lures
are guaranteed to catch fish......

I just wanted to let you know
that I had the privilege of spending a week as an observer
in the 2006 Federation Championship with Joel St. Germain
and watch him pick apart a fishing area with several of your
lures and it was impressive to see how few fish he lost and
how well the lipless crankbait he threw worked as he ripped
it threw the hydrilla. The finish held up like no other lure
I've seen. The detail in the workmanship was outstanding.

Joel is a great guy and a great ambassador for the sport of
fishing, he had nothing but praise for your company and your
products, he sure made a believer out of me. If you could
send me a catalog of your products I will be more than happy
to share this info with the other members in both of the
bass clubs that I belong to.
Thank you again and keep up the great work. Dean A.

Well I got home and had a
package waiting for me. They look simply awesome! I was
really happy with the colors, size, everything. Especially
the weight...
I don't have many wood cranks and was wondering if they
would be heavy enough to cast good distances. They have a
really solid feel and weight
to them. Anyway thanks for your time and craftsmanship...

"Hey Chip, I could
not imagine a better paint job on my lures, even if i had
sent them to Picasso himself, they are awesome!!!!!
I am so happy with the results, probably the most satisfied
customer you have ever had, I mean that, I do, just wanted
to drop you a note to tell you, can't wait to have more
lures painted by you, I will be back in touch when that
happens, anyway, thanks again, bass wishes," R. RAY,

After a great day of fishing on
Saturday "up north", Paula and I went out to our old haunt.
Blue bird skies, jet skiers, and just plain ole gettin' our
butts WHOOPED for several hours made me cranky and ready to
head home when Paula noticed a few nice fish surfacing in
about 25' towards the middle. I didn't care but Paula
badgered me (good thing) to head over and look, telling me
to "just throw a crank."

I cruised over and noticed
several schools of baitfish hovering from 2' to 8', circled
around and started slingin' while mumbling under my breath.
About the 5th cast I found this customer thanks to her and
Carolina Chip's 001 Crankbait! Baby-girl went 3-3 at a
whisker under 20"
