New Slim Carolina Chip Lures Catching Bass In Early Testing

While Lure Designer Chip Carlisle Was Getting Back To His Fishing Roots,  He Develops The New Carolina Slim After Spending A Week On His Childhood Waters

Lake Norman, North Carolina, April 28, 2007 — Spending a week fishing the waters that you learned to catch your first  bass on and where you threw your first handmade lure tends to stir memories of days gone by. Chip Carlisle, owner of Carolina Chip's Lure Company, LLC, spent a week fishing Lake Norman, North Carolina with colleagues Scott Dobson and Marcel Veenstra. Professional anglers, Scott and Marcel were prefishing for the third stop of the National Guard sponsored  2007 FLW tour in which $200,000.00 is awarded to the winner.

Having last fished  these waters in the late 1980's, Chip was overwhelmed with the growth of surrounding Lake Norman and the quality of fish coming out of it. The numbers being caught gave him plenty of opportunity to ponder techniques for catching the spotted and largemouth bass in this lake. While the fluke and the shaky head worm appeared to dominate the catch methods, several fish were caught on Chip's C-Bait.

Chip reports "at the end of each fishing day, discussions about a thinner lure with a tighter action kept making its way into conversation. I was being asked to develop a new design. These dimensions were similar to lures I made several years ago, so turning out a prototype would be no problem. As soon as I returned to Michigan, I went to work in the shop. I tried several patterns and finally came up with a profile that pleased me. I calculated the lip angle and desired weight and turned out my first slim crank in several years."

First views of the lure looked promising, but the lake would be the true test of the lures action and fish catching ability. The lure was first tested on April 26th at a small test pond for action and buoyancy.  The lure ran true and had an action that left the end of the rod tip vibrating. This is what a lure maker desires to see in a bait. Furthermore, the lures buoyancy came  out perfect. The lure has a slight rise to it that leaves it in a strike zone position longer. Chip indicated that "I was happy to see that when I bounced it off structure, that it almost paused in place with a very slow rise!"

This bait was then ready to be tested on waters where bass could be caught. On April 28th, the lure was put to the test in northern waters. "The bass are still waking up here from their winter rest. I was hoping for a bump, to see a follower, or get a little indication that the lure would do well once the bass started the spring crank bite" Chip tells us.

In 45 minutes of testing, four keeper fish were caught. One catch was a blast that sent the bass above surface as it engulfed the lure. Chip points out that "This is just the first test. I would compare this early success on a new prototype lure to throwing a touchdown in the super bowl. I am so confident in this lure, that I will be using them in a tournament on Michigan's Lake St. Clair May 6th for smallmouth. That's confidence!"

In the coming weeks, Carolina Chip's Lure Company will be sending out Carolina Slim crankbaits to professional anglers to see if his enthusiasm for this bait extends into the professional arena. If all goes well, a late June or July product release will follow. "We are going to put this lure on some lunker smallmouth and bigmouths. If the C-Slim holds up to these vicious northern muscle fish, we have another winner!"

As always, a large color selection will be available. Future models will be tested with different lip designs to meet the requirements of the fishermen as water conditions change throughout the season.

Looks like another champion out of the CCLC Shop.
